How much mulch do your flower beds need? The answer depends on bed size and depth. This guide helps you calculate the exact amount so you don’t overbuy or run short.

The Basic Formula

Mulch (cubic yards) = Length × Width × Depth ÷ 324

Length and width in feet, depth in inches

Or use this simpler version:

Mulch (cubic yards) = Square feet × Depth (inches) ÷ 324

How Deep Should Mulch Be?

Different situations need different depths.

Flower Beds: 2-3 inches

  • Annual beds: 2 inches
  • Perennial beds: 2-3 inches
  • New plantings: 2 inches
  • Established beds: 3 inches

Tree Rings: 3-4 inches

  • Keep mulch 3 inches from trunk
  • Extend to drip line if possible
  • Never pile against bark (“volcano mulching”)

Garden Paths: 3-4 inches

  • Higher traffic needs more depth
  • May need refresh yearly

Weed Suppression: 4 inches

  • Thick layer blocks light
  • Combine with landscape fabric

Bags vs Bulk

Bagged Mulch

  • Standard bag: 2 cubic feet
  • Covers: 8 sq ft at 3 inches deep
  • Best for: Small beds under 100 sq ft
  • Cost: $4-6 per bag

Bulk Mulch

  • Sold by cubic yard
  • 1 cubic yard = 13.5 bags
  • Best for: Areas over 100 sq ft
  • Cost: $30-50 per cubic yard

Installation Tips

Prep Work

  1. Remove old mulch if more than 4” total
  2. Pull visible weeds
  3. Edge beds for clean line
  4. Lay landscape fabric (optional)

Application

  1. Start at back of bed
  2. Pour piles every few feet
  3. Spread with rake
  4. Keep away from plant stems
  5. Water lightly to settle

Maintenance

  • Fluff mulch yearly with rake
  • Add 1 inch per year as it breaks down
  • Remove if total exceeds 4 inches

Common Mistakes

  1. Too deep - 4+ inches suffocates roots
  2. Against stems - Causes rot and disease
  3. Fresh mulch yearly - Builds up too fast
  4. Wrong calculator - Using topsoil formula
  5. No edging - Mulch migrates into lawn

Calculate Irregular Beds

For curved or L-shaped beds:

  1. Break into rectangles - Calculate each section
  2. Divide circles - Use πr² (3.14 × radius²)
  3. Add sections - Total all cubic yards
  4. Add 10% - Extra for settling and edges

Circle Bed Example

  • Tree ring diameter: 6 feet
  • Radius: 3 feet
  • Area: 3.14 × 3 × 3 = 28.26 sq ft
  • At 3 inches: 28.26 × 3 ÷ 324 = 0.26 cubic yards
